✅ Things to Know Before Buying and Using a drone

What does the Drone Use Act say?

The use of drones is subject to a very specific regulation. In the outlines, if you buy a drone weighing less than 800 grams, no prior training will be required. If it exceeds this weight, you must register it online on the dedicated AlphaTango platform. In addition, you will need to take online training in order to be able to fly your drone legally and be at least 14 years old, the legal age to fly a drone.

You also need to be able to present your training follow-up certificate obtained after passing the online test when using your drone. For persons who have not reached the legal age of 14, they can remotely pilot the drone, provided they are accompanied by an adult who has reached the age of 18 and who holds the certificate.

In case your drone weighs more than 800 grams, you must be able when using it, to present its recording extract. For more information and other specific cases, please refer to the Guide to the Simplified Recreational and Professional Use of Unmanned Aircraft on Board at this address.

What is AlphaTango?

Administered by the CSAD (Civil Aviation Safety Directorate), AlphaTango is a web portal made available to users of remotely piloted aircraft (drones) that allows users, among other things, to:

  • Manage their personal data.
  • Register aircraft owned by them (this feature will be available upon publication of the implementing legislation of Act No. 2016-1428 on Enhancing the Safety of the Use of Civil Drones).
  • Obtain a certificate of follow-up training, for recreational telepilots who have completed the Fox AlphaTango online training and equivalent training provided by FAAM/UFOLEP federations.
  • Declare their activity as a professional operator and carry out other procedures applicable to this aircraft (annual review of activities, notification of certain flights to the Ministry of the Armed Forces or the territorially competent prefecture).

🔎 What are the air rules to follow when using a drone?

A few essential rules must be adhered to when using your drone. As with the traffic regulations, not complying with them can be dangerous and exposes you to penalties. Here are the rules of the air.

  • Never fly more than 120 meters above ground
  • Some areas are prohibited for drones and others set a maximum flight height of less than 120 metres.
  • It is strictly forbidden to fly near airports, airfields and heliport
  • The overflight of an accident, fire or disaster site is prohibited
  • You must immediately place your aircraft when you see an aircraft (emergency helicopter, military aircraft…)

🤔 What are the flying rules for a drone?

In order to protect people but also so-called sensitive sites, there are the rules of hover. The first objective of the regulations is to ensure the safety of other aircraft. The second objective is to ensure the safety of people on the ground. Remotely piloted aircraft (drones) can cause serious injury to people on the ground. For this, it is important to adhere to these few flying rules:

  • You do not have to fly in urban areas, above public space
  • You can fly in urban areas, in a private space, subject to the agreement of the owner of the premises
  • By respecting a height and speed adapted to the environment (trees, buildings…)
  • Overflight of sensitive sites is prohibited (nuclear power plants, military zones, hospitals, prisons, nature reserves)

You can find towns and areas that are not allowed to fly due to the presence of sensitive sites by visiting the restrictions map for recreational drones.
