Tips to work well as a team

In the age of individualism, where everyone is centered around their navel and person, we’ve never talked more about teamwork as collaborative enterprise work . At some point in our professional life, we all worked with our colleagues on the same file, the same project. Otherwise, it’s that you’ve probably spent the last few years in a cave 😉

The fact is that teamwork is not as effective as it could be Teamwork is not innate in companies, largely because of the lack of good practices of collaboration between team members: it requires effort staff of all those who make up this team. Without a desire for cohesion and organization on the part of all members of the team, the group dynamics are not created and the team, which has only its name, is composed of people working on the same file, but each for its own interest and not for a common purpose.

What is a team?

But first of all, how to define a team?

A team is a group of several people (I teach you nothing so far 😉), working collectively and collaboratively to achieve a common goal . Teamwork must be carried out in a cohesion of all team members, in communication and in the organization.

In other words, for a team to be truly effectiveand exceeds the sum of the games, all team members must be able to work in the same fashion. Organization, according to the same mode of communication, in total cohesion , and not working for their personal interests but for the interests of the team.

But how is teamwork born and what are the key factors of teamwork?

How to work effectively as a team: best practices for collaboration

For team cohesion to be created, it is important that good collaborative practices are put in place within the team and that they are endorsed and respected by all team members .

Indeed, if these collaborative good practices are imposed but some employees do not adhere to them, these practices will quickly break, and you can say goodbye to cohesion and effective teamwork. But you don’t want that, is it not?

😉 Here are the best practices that I think necessary for a team to run smoothly (they work anyway in my case):

1 — Be transparent and honest

You don’t work alone in your corner, you work as a team. Therefore, it is important to communicate, share .

Be honest and transparent with your team:

  • You do not agree with a proposal from one of the team members? Say it, and talk.
  • Do you have problems with a case? Let it know, do not slip your problem under the carpet, it will not magically disappear and eventually come out amplified.
  • Take the time to talk to your team about your feelings about this or that project, your mood of the day, etc…

2 — Always respect

Respect above allcolleagues , we will never insist enough on this point.

Respect goes through courtesy, “hello”, “thank you”, “please”, but respect is also:

  • Do not denigrate your colleagues
  • Wait until his colleague has finished talking
  • Do not address your colleague as a child
  • Recognize the professionalism of your colleague, even if he has less experience than you
  • Accept that we are all different

3 — Accepting the right to error

We are all human, and we have all made mistakes in our professional lives.

You have the right to be wrong, as do your colleagues . So do not treat your incompetent colleagues because they have forgotten a step in a task normally easy to perform, do Don’t curse.

They have the right to error. Seek to understand what might have produced this error, and work together to resolve it.

4 — Do not let the situation deteriorate

If you find that one of your colleagues is overloaded, more stressed than usual, less performing, do not let the situation deteriorate.

Show your colleague that he is not alone, that you do not judge him, but that you are a team, that you work together and that you support each other.

Banish all phrases of the type “each one’s problem”. You work as a team, and inevitably if you let a situation break down, you will eventually suffer.

5 — Providing assistance and/or solutions

Do not hesitate to take some time to offer your help, ideas and solutions to your colleagues in difficulty.

Sometimes, faced with problems, we go back in circles while the solution is under our nose, and the intervention of a colleague can help us unlock this situation.

This will allow the team to create real cohesion and move together towards a common goal.

6 — Do not isolate yourself if you are in trouble

When you have difficulties, do not isolate yourself and hope to solve them in your area.

Invite your colleagues on this issue and work together to solve it.

7 — Practice humor as often as possible

You can work seriously and efficiently while smiling, laughing and enjoying what you are doing.

Decipher yourself, practice humor in the office, have fun!

Forget about stiffness, acidity, “grinchoity” (no, this word is not in the dico 😉), etc…

8 — Consider that any idea has value and should be heard

There are no stupid questions, there are no stupid ideas, all questions and ideas are the same.

Take the time to listen to your colleagues , it’s not because you have 20 years of club that you know everything.

9 — Integrate that all success is common and shareable

Your victories are the result of teamwork, so it’s important to accept and share them.

Of course, you have invested much more time and energy in this project than your other colleagues, but if they hadn’t intervened on the key moments of this project, would you like to celebrate this success?

Put aside your ego and recognize the common work that has been done.

10 — Demonstrate Proactivity

Reactivity should be avoided as much as possible and proactivity should be developed.

Example: Do not wait for your customers to complain one by one about the poor ergonomics of your product. Be proactive, communicate with your customers that you are facing this problem, that it will be solved in the near future and get to work.

11 — Forget the “I don’t have time”

What could be more annoying than someone who tells you it doesn’t have time, when you need them to move on your file.

You do not ask your colleagues a pure pleasure to disturb them. We’re all busy, we all have tons of things to do. So the next time a colleague comes to ask for your help, listen to it.

You don’t have to deal with her case immediately, but in this case, put a moment with him to see this together.

12 — Develop mutual help and sharing with other teams

Don’t stay with your team in your ivory tower, like Sarouman in The Lord of the Rings.

Go see the other teams, share, exchange , sting the neighbor’s chocolatines (but discreetly, of course 😉)

13 — Constructive criticism

Do not judge, and do not criticize your colleagues. In no case.

Always make constructive criticism, but only about the work. Avoid the “you should have done this way”, and prefer the “I don’t know what you’re doing.” think, but I would see such an improvement on this file to make it more readable”.

That makes all the difference!


These good practices are not rules and do not are therefore not immutable. Everyone is free to apply them in the air, adapt them, be inspired, etc…

The important thing is that these good collaborative practices :

  • Must not be imposed on team members
  • Must be approved by all team members
  • Must be known and applied daily
