Mounting a wooden pool above ground is more or less complicated depending on whether you are a handyman or not Oops! No ground protection! Moisture from the soil will attack the backwood in a few years… You need to prepare the ground, equip yourself with the right tools, plan the site and act.
In order for the assembly to be successful, it is necessary to remain calm and adhere to a few simple rules. Sometimes the help of at least one person will be needed to install certain elements. If the installation takes a little delay or sometimes taps you on the nerves, the best thing is to adjourn to do things serenely.

Mounting a wooden pool above ground: two possibilities
Your wooden pool is a kit model or model personalized .

In both cases, the supplied pack usually contains all the elements necessary for the construction. —Structural elements : boards, boards, martyrs parts, felt, lining, ladder, borders, screws, IPN, floor protection (not always).— Filter elements : either an integrated filter block (mounted on the wall and border), or a filter block to be assembled (skimmer, discharge— Optional elements according to the model Selected: protective cover , cleaning kit (telescopic handle, landing net, brush head, cleaning products), decorative elements (technical room box, heating system) and options (regulator, robot cleaner, electrical box).
Case 1: This is a pool kit
This is the most common formula , successfully based on a simple formula: it costs less (no work in the commercial sense of the word, self-construction), we go at its own pace and get great satisfaction (“I built it myself! ”). For the less handymen, the learning curve is not complicated because skills and know-how are acquired at work, as construction progresses. She’s kind of a game kid…
The advantage of this type of kit is its ease of assembly, as it is accompanied by detailed documentation to do everything alone : publishing diagram, printed book with photos, audiovisual media (cd, web pages) and telephone support if necessary.
Case 2: This is a custom pool
The pack includes all the pond elements selected when ordering, but the assembly instructions may not be provided . It depends on the manufacturer. He will therefore have to appeal to his skills as a handyman and/or ask the manufacturer, bearing in mind that the assembly principle is the same as for a pool kit.
In this case, too, you will be very happy if you perform the assembly and installation yourself.
The 4 steps to mount and install your above-ground wooden pool
The assembly and installation of an above-ground wooden pool passes through 4 key moments: receiving the material, determining the best location, preparing the location (most importantly), installing the pool.
1 — Receiving and storing equipment
The big day has arrived, the carrier finally delivers you the pool you ordered. Great moment of euphoria mixed with stress? It’s normal!
If possible, Start by checking the delivered items, otherwise always do so before assembly
The first reflex is to do a delivery control and, if possible, an inventory and an exhaustive inventory of all items delivered. As you will have to check sooner or later the conformity between what you ordered and what is delivered to you, as well as the fact that the truck is at your door: — Is what I delivered conforms to what I ordered?— Do the product reference, model, advertised dimensions comply?— In what condition are the goods?“Are there shortages?
In case of a truly flagrant anomaly, refuse receipt and do not sign the delivery note or accept the receipt only of compliant items Since receipt, you are not immune from unpleasant surprises: missing parts, defective parts, poorly calibrated. Here the wood was delivered with mushrooms… This will save you time for the manufacturer/distributor to correct the order.
Unfortunately, in most cases, this inventory can only be done after, once the delivery man has left and you start unpacking the parcels.
Indeed, delivery often passes through a third party delivery company. The driver/delivery man does not have time to stay the time of this inventory. In this case, components will need to be stored and protected before inventory.
In any case, a complete and detailed inventory before assembly is a mandatory passage . This is usually recorded in the preamble of the assembly instructions.
Properly store components
Since the preparation of the site and installation of the Swimming pool will take several days (depending on the models, time and resources available), the equipment should be stored in a place where it is safe.
Normally (sic!), you have already prepared this space before delivery because you are someone planning . If this is not done, make sure all your parcels are safe, with enough space to move around and allow safe load movements for equipment and equipment carriers.
The most critical elements are, in order of priority, wood, waterproof coating (lining, membrane) and filtration equipment (nozzle, skimmer, pump, filter block) and plastic elements (piping).
Put the wood in a dry, airy and temperate shelter because it is a fragile material
Although wood is treated for a outdoor and wet use, it is a living material that reacts to contact air, temperature, sun and humidity. It can deform, increase in volume or even crack in certain places, which does not compromise the assembly but could complicate it: offset, appearance problem.
Put the coating in a warm shelter to soften the membrane
The coating (lining, membrane) should instead be stored in a warm place. To be more easily mounted, the coating should be warm to soften and stretch. Otherwise, it must be mounted on a day of great sunshine by stretching and stretching it so that the heat softens it. This will make it easier to assemble.
2 — Find the right location
Before mounting, it is necessary to find the best possible location. It will be necessary to arbitrate between bathing comfort and practical aspects in order to facilitate the day-to-day management of the basin.
How to choose a good location?
Choosing the right location is a more important point than it seems. Maybe you already have a very specific idea, but here are some common sense reminders . The evidence must be invoked taking into account the specifics of the terrain, the surrounding nature and the surrounding area.
The pool should be positioned on a flat surface that does not risk sagging once the pool is in the water “A flat surface” because the wooden pools are flat bottom and once filled, the surface of the water body will form a flat level. If the pelvis bends on one side, then the water mass too. Whether the terrain is flat or inclined, it will be necessary to shell out to remove pebbles, roots and level the location.
“ Who does not risk collapse” because a water pool has a huge weight, reminder: 1 m3 of water = 1000 kilos. If the weight of the water grows on one side of the basin, the pond structure can deform or break with these stresses. The larger the basin, the higher the risk of sagging and the more it is necessary to strengthen the floor on which the pool rests . The weight of the water-full structure can sag the soil alone. Thus, for large basins, is an imperative of concrete slab. But even for small basins it is better to do this, or at least one geotextile under a crushed or rounded layer of gravel by 5-7cm.
Sunny, windy, away from trees and outside eyes A windy pool needs to be filtered longer and cleaned more often because that the wind drains impurities: leaves, pollen. The bathing water will therefore be more easily of lower quality, not forgetting that it will spoil the pleasure of swimming: feeling cold when it comes out of the water, unless it is very hot.
Never place a pool under trees or branches , otherwise you will always have diverse and varied leaves, insects and impurities swimming in your pool. Not to mention that the basin can be in the shade at certain times of the day, which can cause problems when heating the water.
The temperature of the bathing water is an important point. By choosing a sunny place, the water can (re) heat more easily, either naturally or with a tarpaulin.
For comfort, if possible, also plan a place out of sight so as not to be indisposed by the immediate neighborhood.
Natural evaporation of water will force you to fill the pond during periods of high heat, if possible plan an inflow of water not too far.
Last point, the filtration system works thanks to electricity. If possible, have electric access not too far from the pool to avoid extension cords.
3 — Prepare the location well: the most important step
It may sound harmless, but it is this aspect of installing your pool that deserves the most attention. This will make the difference between a pool that will need to be replaced after 5 years and a pool that can last 10 years, which is the time of the generally observed warranty. A failure on this point can simply blow the warranty: some manufacturers impose a concrete slab even for small models.
Mark the location by marking on the ground
Leave a little wider than the size of the pelvis: 20-50 cm more.
Pour out by removing everything that can be disbursed and smooth
The location should be perfectly flat and stable to avoid the above-mentioned problems: deformation or sagging of the structure due to weight.
The height of disbursement varies depending on how the soil will be strengthened. In any case, remove the roots, pebbles, protruding stones. To have a flat surface, use a bubble level.
For electrical connections of the pool, if you do not feel able, call a company because the fire risks are real. If you bury electrical cables, this must be done in the norms of trenches and protection of electrical wires. Even if you want to bury water pipes for the removal of sewage.
Strengthening the soil is not always mandatory, but advisable to avoid rising soil moisture and avoid sagging of the structure
If the terrain is flat, not wet, as laid on a flat rock, this will not apply and you can quickly proceed to mounting.
In all other cases, it is necessary to strengthen the soil: — either by laying geotextile protection to prevent moisture and regrowth of plants, on which a bed of gravel or sand.— or by making a concrete slab of at least 10-15 cm (highly recommended), especially true for large wooden pools Dimension: risk of real collapse because the wood works a lot. Between moisture rising from the ground, rainwater runoff and the weight of your pool when it is full of water, it is definitely a point not to forget: you are warned! No floor protection… Between rising moisture and thermal shock, woodworking, bottom boards rot faster, deform, sag The dimensions provided by manufacturers in the assembly instructions must be adhered to. If you are planning metal spacers (type IPN), consider sealing them in concrete.
If you are not equipped (concrete mixer), you can borrow or rent the equipment. And if it seems complicated, you can go through a professional: click on the “contact a professional” button below or in the top menu, quotation requests are free for individuals.
4 — Mounting
So there’s still the change to make now: prepare your tools, plan your operations and act.
Tools and equipment to use
You will need different tools: a hammer, a hammer, a pencil, a tape measure, a level of bubbles, corners, a drill and a set of drills, a screwdriver, a set of flat and Phillips screwdrivers, a set of flat wrenches and pipes, a knife, a wood or metal saw and glue.
It can be useful to install spacers if the basin is long : rectangular or oval pool. This will prevent the sagging of the walls and it will strengthen the curbs…
Tentative time: from 1 day to 1 week
Manufacturers usually advise to mount the pool within 24-48 hours after receiving the components, especially because the wood is working. It’s not always easy to find time for that. These indications can be found in assembly instructions.
Depending on the type of pool (shape, size), the number and motivation of the people who come together (it is better to have at least 2), your DIY skills and the quality of the instructions or documentation provided, it takes 1 day to 1 week to build your pool.
This time comes in addition to the time required to prepare the site.
If possible, prefer rainless days for all stages of assembly and a beautiful sunny day for the installation of the lining .
Place for mounting
Carefully read the instructions and mounting plans provided by the manufacturer and follow the steps . If this is not the case, you can number the wooden planks/boards for easy assembly.
The sequence order below may vary by one model to each other.
1 — Setting up the walls Start with the wall that houses the skimmer. Martyr mallet and piece to properly enclose the boards along the length and in the corners: Start with the wall that will accommodate the skimmer. If there are prevailing winds, place the skimmer in front of the prevailing wind so that the wind blows in its direction. The filtration of the pond will only be better.
On some models, the skimmer and/or nozzle must be recessed before overlaying the top boards. The boards are assembled on each other or vertically.
You need to use a martyr piece to clip them well to the grooves. At the corners, the cutting of the boards must fit perfectly together thanks to the cutting angles.
At this level, the critical points are the placement of skimmers (horse hole on 2 boards) and discharge nozzles (round hole in a board) as recommended by assembly. Finish the assembly up.
2 — Installation of sidewalk supports : triangular wooden parts or metal supports according to the models. Respect the spacing and remember that the borders are a point of fragility: walking, sitting, diving. They tend to break first. The brackets must therefore be well stable and fixed. Install them to the perpendicular, the screws settle from the inside of the pelvis.
3 – Installation of the lining rings/rails : depending on the models, the rods can be placed after or before the wall felt. 25 cm Spacer Screw Install the rail on the highest line of boards.
Cut corners with the hacksaw, making sure that the hatches/rails meet well with angles, because the weight of water will put pressure on the lining in the angular corners. It should not be slipped because of the weight of water.
4 — Installation of the discharge nozzle (part 1) . The discharge nozzle is the point of return of water into the basin, once it has been filtered by the filter block (sand, cartridge). Its water jet allows water to flow through the basin, towards the skimmer. Depending on the model can be done also after installation of the wall felt. Part to screw and seal through the wall in a round hole.
5 — Installation of the skimmer (Part 1) The skimmer is the entry point into the filtration system, this is where the water to be filtered. Place the workpiece in the intended notch and screw it from the back of the wall. Stick a first rigid seal to the strong glue by aligning holes.
6 — Fixing straight legs or struts . Elements specific to some wooden pool models that serve to strengthen the structure. Reinforcements screwed vertically along the entire length of the pelvis and intended to stiffen the walls. They absorb water pressure. To fasten /screw from the inside of the pelvis to each level of board and cut flush with the last level of boards.
7 — Laying the bottom and wall felt . Strawberry will serve you to cut what protrudes. Depending on the models, it must be installed (glued, nailed, claped) behind the baguettes of the lining or under the level of the baguettes. Cut around the nozzle and skimmer, 1-2 cm around these pieces. It should not be interspersed between the joints and the lining.
8 — Lining : The lining is the membrane that will ensure waterproofing of the pelvis. It is necessary to take care and install it correctly . The exterior facade to be installed on the wood side is the one that has the seams. The top of the lining will come in the rail.
To facilitate the installation of the lining, lay it in the sun a few hours before it is mounted to make it softer. Start with an angle when cutting (the principle of the male/female socket) and so on, along the wall. This operation may need to be repeated several times.
Chase the folds. Once installed, put 2cm of water at the bottom of the basin to unhook it. Barefoot in the water or with the help of a soft broom head, chase folds, air holes towards the walls. Do not yet cut the passages for the discharge nozzle and skim it.
9 — Laying curbs . Finishing elements of the pool, an exposed part that gives character to the pool. The border should protrude about 2 cm inside the pelvis. First it is necessary to lay them and make pre-holes. Screw the borders only after you have all installed and adjusted them. They can have a coating to hide screws and prevent accidents such as abrasions to the foot, remove textiles.
10 – Fill the basin below the first piece to be sealed : it can be the projector or the discharge nozzle. The goal is to stretch the lining as much as possible so that the final installation of the parts to be sealed is as accurate as possible.
11 — Installation of the discharge nozzle (part 2) . The lining should be taken “sandwiched” between two joints fixed on either side of the wall. Before fix or drill, check that the water level is just below the nozzle to position the coating as much as possible.
Depending on the model, remove the protective film from the adhesive seal and attach it to the discharge flange.Locate the holes for fixing the screws under the lining and fix the flange via the screw.
With the cutter, cut out the opening of the discharge in the lining. sealing is done thanks to the seals.Attach the ball to the discharge. Shake by hand.
12 — Laying the skimmer (part 2) .The lining should be sandwiched between two joints: Skimmer inner walls and skimmer frame. Climb the water just below the skimmer.
After you spot the screw holes of the skimmer through the lining, glue the skimmer frame to the edge of the inner walls of the skimmer with two or three points of strong glue. Now carefully screw the skimmer frame to get a perfect seal.
With the strawberry, cut the opening of the skimmer into the lining.
13 — Laying the ladder once everything goes well on the previous points. The end is near now, the hardest has been done. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
14 — Filtration installation: pipe installation, filter installation, pump and connections . Follow the instructions provided. Install the filter block next to the pond. This is not necessarily the simplest, because it will have to be done everything. It filtration system is very important.
15 — Put water up to 3/4 of the skimmers and test/start filtration .
16 — Celebrate this moment because you have worked well . Congratulations! Congratulations! The best is coming 🙂
