ESTA application: how to do it?

Stay in the United States: ESTA, your e-visa

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization ) is a residence permit that can be issued to nationals of certain eligible persons who have signed an agreement with the United States.

This specific program (Visa Waiver Program) was established to facilitate visa waiver and thus the controls and mobility of travellers on U.S. soil. ESTA is intended for any traveller who wishes to spend a maximum of 90 days in the United States, as part of a tourist or business trip .

ESTA is valid for a period of 2 years, or until the expiry of your passport, if the expiry date of the passport is earlier than two years.

Apply ESTA: the formalities

Certain conditions must be met in order to be granted ESTA residence permit:

  • Have a valid biometric or electronic passport (covering the stay);
  • Be a national of one of the ESTA eligible countries;
  • Getting around for a sightseeing trip or a trip professional, or be in transit or stopover required;
  • Stay maximum 90 days on American soil;
  • Get your ESTA authorization application validated by the US authorities.

ESTA is in a way your electronic visa to travel within the United States, whether travelling or simply in transit or for a stopover . ESTA is necessary as soon as you plan to put your foot on the floor of the United States. Your ESTA is checked upon arrival by plane on American soil.

Good to know : any ESTA residence permit application can be approved within24 hours to 72 hours after your online application (ESTA online form). The deadlines are much less important than for a conventional visa (between 4 and 6 weeks).

Nationals: ESTA eligible countries

37 countries are eligible ESTA USA. Verify that you are a national of one of these 37 countries. If this is not the case, your ESTA application will be refused and you will need to apply for a regular B1/B2 Temporary Stay Visa at the U.S. Consulate or Embassy.

Non-eligibility : There are restrictions on the use of the Aim Waiver Program with ESTA. Be sure to find out if you belong to these categories of travellers before filling out your online form.

  • Civility;
  • Information about your passport;
  • Your family situation;
  • Your current state of health;
  • The reasons for your stay or stopover in the United States.
